The Guangdong Power Grid, a wholly-owned subsidiary of China Southern Power Grid China Southern Power Grid, showcased China's first humanoid design for the power sector at the 26th China Hi-Tech Fair (CHTF), drawing widespread attention. According to Li Duanjiao, Deputy General Manager of the Production Technology Departmentof the Guangdong Power Grid, this groundbreaking robot combines a human-like appearance with versatile operational capabilities, showing a wide prospect for itsapplication in its field. It is expected to be applied in actual production by the first half of 2025.
Standing nearly as tall as an average person, the robot features flexible limbs and advanced vision systems. It can walk, climb stairs, and perform complex tasks such as gripping objects, pressing buttons, toggling switches, and using power tools. These capabilities suit it for high-risk tasks including inspections and troubleshooting at unmanned substations. "This is the first humanoid in China tailored for the power industry. Currently, in the testing phase, it will leverage AI to enhance its intelligence for autonomous operations," said Li.
In addition to the humanoid, Guangdong Power Grid presented a range of smart devices at the fair. These include a dual-arm live working robot for the distribution network, a quadruped inspection robot, inspection drones with docking stations, and laser obstacle removers. These innovations showcase the latest breakthroughs in power grid maintenance and attracted significant interest from attendees.
A company representative shared that Guangdong Power Grid has been focusing on advanced smart maintenance technologies for complex power networks. Their comprehensive panoramic inspection network integrates the Beidou NavigationSatellite System and digital twin models of equipment. The company has developed multiple inspection robots and specialized operational devices, achievingdigitalized, environmentally friendly, and intelligentmaintenance of the power network. Currently, these technologies have been applied in fields including renewable energy, transportation, and smart cities, supporting the construction of new industrial systemssolidly.
