On June 28th, the Liwan Intangible Cultural Heritage Cluster officially opened, serving as Guangzhou's first productive intangible cultural heritage cluster. Spanning 12,000 square meters, the initial phase of the cluster has attracted 20 intangible cultural heritage master studios, which are run by national, provincial, municipal, and district-level inheritors of intangible cultural heritage. The cluster is dedicated to functioning as a comprehensive platform for production, exhibition, sales, and educational research in the field of intangible cultural heritage.
In 2022, Liwan District formulated and implemented the "Measures for Promoting the High-Quality Development of Intangible Cultural Heritage Protection in Liwan District". In constructing the Liwan Intangible Cultural Heritage Cluster, the government followed these measures, adopting a three-party contract model where state-owned enterprises provide benefits, the government offers support, and the inheritors assume responsibilities. This approach provides support to the inheritors who join the cluster.
Tan Guanghui, a representative inheritor of Guangzhou Painted Porcelain, or guangcai porcelain, a national-level intangible cultural heritage, operates Guanghui Painted Porcelain Studio, which spans over 500 square meters and includes different functional areas such as porcelain production, exhibition hall, lecture room, and experience room. Tan Guanghui shared, "With the progress of the old city renovation project, my studio producing guangcai porcelain faced the need for relocation. The completion of the Liwan Intangible Cultural Heritage Cluster has resolved my concerns and allowed the less-known intangible cultural heritage to enter a modern industrial park. Moreover, supported by the policies, I rented the studio for 10 yuan per square meter, saving rental costs for the studio." Tan Guanghui believes that the studio located in the cluster is a more comprehensive one, while the studio in the intangible cultural heritage street of Yongqingfang block serves as a showcase for intangible cultural heritage. In the future, Tan Guanghui will carry out the entire process of creating Guangzhou Painted Porcelain in the cluster.
The Liwan Intangible Cultural Heritage Cluster is not only home to national and provincial-level inheritors but also introduces a group of young inheritors, with an average age of around forty, injecting new energy into the cluster. Mai Zhumei, a representative inheritor of an ivory carving at the municipal level, is one such young inheritor who studied under Zhang Minhui, a national-level representative inheritor of ivory carving. Previously, Mai Zhumei created works in her master's studio, but after moving to the Liwan cluster, she now has an independent studio.
Mai Zhumei said, "In the 100-square-meter studio, I can arrange the workspace according to my preferred style, which helps stimulate my creativity. Additionally, the supportive policies provide rent benefits to intangible cultural heritage inheritors' studios, enabling young inheritors to invest their limited funds into intangible cultural heritage creation." In recent years, in addition to inheriting Zhang Minhui's traditional carving techniques, Mai Zhumei has gradually developed her own artistic style. She carves ivory into earrings, pendants, and miniature ornaments, allowing intangible cultural heritage to become part of people's daily lives.
