The 14th Metropolis World Congress and Brussels Urban Summit 2023 kicked off in Brussels, the capital of Belgium from June 12th to 15th local time, where a delegation from Guangzhou attended the event.
On the afternoon of June 14th local time, the plenary session of the World Association of Major Metropolises (WAMM) was held, at which an election for the leadership of the association was conducted. Guangzhou successfully retained its position as the president city of the WAMM, continuously responsible for the WAMM Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific.

Guangzhou became one of its members in 1993 and was elected as a board one in 1996, referring to the earliest Chinese member city. From 2020 to 2022, Guangzhou successfully chaired the association, marking the first Chinese city to hold the position.
The conference brought together representatives from over 600 cities from 118 countries and regions, with more than 2,000 government officials, scholars, experts, and business professionals participating both online and offline in the discussion and exchange of ideas on strengthening inter-city communication and cooperation and jointly addressing global challenges. Dakar in Senegal was elected as the current president city, co-chaired by Guangzhou in China, the Brussels-Capital Region of Belgium, Tehran in Iran, Seoul in South Korea, Montevideo in Uruguay, and the Barcelona urban area in Spain.
Zhang Yajie, vice chairwoman of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference Guangzhou Committee, delivered a speech at the plenary session, pointing out that Guangzhou has successfully held 5 sections of the Guangzhou International Award For Urban Innovation (an award organized by the Guangzhou City and the United Cities and Local Governments and jointly initiated by WAMM), which has collected 1,361 outstanding cases of urban innovation from 556 cities in 96 countries and regions, providing useful references for global cities.
During the congress, the Guangzhou delegation also participated in the "Green and Beautiful Cities" policy debate, the "Urban Ecosystem Restoration" side event, the "Asian Corner" side event, the "Urban Population Mental Health" royal exchange, and the Executive Committee meeting of the World Organisation of United Cities and Local Governments (UCLG), where Chinese solutions with Guangzhou's practices are globally shared in terms of urban governance innovation, green and beautiful cities, and health and wellness.
