On June 6th, the 2023 Maritime Guangdong Young Director Support Program (referred to as the Maritime Guangdong Program) announced the list of short film directors who made it to the preliminary round of the themed short film competition. A total of 24 young directors have been shortlisted in the first round.
The Maritime Guangdong Program was launched by Yangcheng Evening News, a major cultural media in Guangdong. It aims to select and support young filmmakers with unique perspectives on Lingnan culture and the cultural heritage of the Greater Bay Area, a hometown of overseas Chinese, to showcase the international aspects of Lingnan culture. The themed short film competition of the program opened for registration on April 25th. In merely over a month of recruitment, it has attracted numerous young Chinese visual content creators. Some of the applicants are overseas Chinese and graduates and students of overseas universities. Half of them have been finalists or prize-winners of international film festivals at home and abroad.
Due to the unexpectedly high number of applicants, to ensure fair and impartial selection, the organizing committee announced that an additional proposal meeting would be held for the shortlisted young directors. The 24 preliminary shortlisted directors will attend the proposal meeting in the middle of June, and six finalists will be announced after the meeting. The finalists will each receive a maximum of 200,000 yuan in funding and will produce themed short films with the guidance and assistance of a professional mentor team.
Furthermore, the second division of the program - the 2023 Maritime Guangdong Microfilm/Short Film Competition - is still open for submissions. This section is open to young filmmakers and college students worldwide, accepting short films with a duration of up to 10 minutes. The deadline for registration is July 20th.
