Since its launch on April 25, the 2023 Maritime Guangdong Young Director Support Program has attracted widespread attention. On May 16, the program announced its first batch of mentor jury, with seven domestic and international mentors officially appearing and issuing invitations to young creators.
Xiao Xiaoqing, the full-time vice chairman of the Guangdong Film Association: Guangdong, as the front line of reform and opening up and the birthplace of Lingnan culture, embraces a fertile breeding ground for film creation. This program firstly means to search for the roots of Lingnan culture inwardly, and secondly, to enhance the dissemination and influence of Lingnan culture externally, using film to connect tradition and the future.
Zhang Zhenjiang, dean of the Academy of Overseas Chinese Studies at Jinan University: The best embodiment of Guangdong culture's geographic and global nature can be found in overseas Chinese communities. The program aims to learn from the three characteristics of the Chinese diaspora: the emphasis on local culture, the understanding of foreign cultures, and the ability to connect different cultures.
Chen Jiming, writer: Some consider that there is no need for films to be literary, while I counter that literariness is the foundation of movies.Many of the directors we are familiar with have literary qualities in their works as a bonus point. Therefore, young video creators need to have a grasp of literary qualities. And specifically in terms of how to create works, I believe the most important thing for creators is to forget intentions and immerse themselves in the story. Sometimes it's easy to get caught up in preaching and take themes first, in which excellent work fails. So, creators should have no desire for the text but change their focus on telling the story well instead.
Xie Deju, director: There are many young people with film dreams, but it's best to possess a range of skills with a focus if they want to go in a professional direction. By being adaptable and doing everything at the beginning, you can find the direction that suits you best. Once you specialize in one area at a certain level, you will be more comfortable and confident when you move into directing.
Li Xuewu, dean of the School of Art/ Pearl River Film Academy of Jinan University: Having worked with many young filmmakers over the years, I've noticed a significant difference in the way they think and create compared to previous generations. While my generation grew up on literary works, today's young filmmakers have grown up on audiovisual works. For them, the language of sight and sound is their mother tongue. My hope is that young filmmakers will maintain their "pure mother tongue" while learning a new "language", the language of storytelling.I hope to see works in the Maritime Guangdong Program that combine personal experiences with traditional culture and tell them in the form of stories, through which video creators with sustainable innovation capability could be identified and cultivated.
Chen Xuejun, film and television planner and producer: For young creators, the issues of the times and personal expression are two priorities that they should address in their journey of creating. Creators are allowed to have a unique artistic style without too much self-expression. Creators need to accumulate experience when it comes to current social issues, as only rich experience and deep reflection can bring out excellent subjects. I hope that the program can achieve the following goals: discovering unique themes; upholding fundamental principles and breaking new ground in theme refinement and artistic handling tomake excellent works and cultivate directors.
Jeremiah Foo, Malaysian television and film producer: In this era of high subscription rates on internet platforms, regionally specific films must have three key elements to spread overseas: a compelling, high-quality story, a top-notch production, and high-quality subtitles. Why is subtitling so important? Over the past few years, it has become apparent to me that people are so used to reading subtitles that unfamiliar languages are no longer a barrier to distribution, which is beneficial for Chinese films. It matters little for foreigners to understand what the film is about if the story is good enough. In this program, I hope to see more diverse expressions. What are the landscapes of the mountains and the sea in other countries? I look forward to seeing young people from different backgrounds sharing their own stories from their own perspectives.
2023山海计划 首批导师揭晓,专业阵容助力鲜活创作!
自4月25日启动以来,2023“向山海走去”青年导演创作扶持计划(以下简称“山海计划”)引发了广泛关注。5月16日,“山海计划”公布首批导师评审团名单,七位国内外导师正式亮相,向青年创作者发出邀请。
广东省电影家协会专职副主席肖小青:广东拥有电影创作的丰厚土壤。期待山海计划的作品可以做到向内寻找我们岭南文化的根脉,对外提高岭南文化的传播力和影响力。用电影,连接传统与未来。
暨南大学国际关系学院华侨华人研究院院长张振江:岭南文化的地缘性和世界性就体现在华侨华人身上。作为面向海内外华人青年导演人才的扶持计划,期待山海计划能用中国故事打动世界观众。

金鸡奖最佳儿童片《点点星光》导演谢德炬:怀有电影梦的年轻人要“一专多能”,“多能”是在摸爬滚打当中找到适合自己的方向进行突破;“一专”就是这个突破口。期待山海计划能够发掘出好的苗子,让他们在这个平台上有所成长!
