What positive signals were sent by Prime Minister of Singapore Lee Hsien Loong with his visit to China-Singapore International Joint Research Institute?
At the invitation of Premier Li Qiang, Prime Minister of Singapore Lee Hsien Loong paid an official visit to China from March 27 to April 1, 2023, in conjunction with his attendance at the opening ceremony of the Boao Forum for Asia. The first stop of Lee Hsien Loong's visit was Guangdong, demonstrating the deep friendship between Singapore and Guangdong for cooperation and development.
Lee visited the China-Singapore Joint International Research Institute on March 28th. The Institute is jointly established by the China-Singapore Guangzhou Knowledge City Administrative Committee, South China University of Technology, Nanyang Technological University of Singapore, and China-Singapore Guangzhou Knowledge City Investment and Development Co., Ltd. Relying on the China-Singapore Guangzhou Knowledge City, it is a major China-Singapore technology cooperation platform that gathers world-class research resources.
“I think Prime Minister of Singapore Lee Hsien Loong’s visit to Guangzhou has played a positive role in promoting China-Singapore collaboration projects such as our Institute,” said Gu Haiwen, vice president of the China-Singapore International Joint Research Institute. “From the field of scientific and technological innovation and international technology translation that I am engaged in, the Institute focuses on new energy, new materials, artificial intelligence, green buildings & smart cities, pollution control & environmental restoration, launched over 70 China-Singapore joint commercialization projects, successfully transformed multiple international research outcomes in Guangzhou. This visit is not only a recognition of China-Singapore cooperation in Guangdong from Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, but also a positive signal that makes us more determined and confident in building our Institute into a world-class new R&D organization.”
The China-Singapore Guangzhou Knowledge City is the product of deepening cooperation between Guangzhou and Singapore. Guangdong and Singapore came up with the idea of jointly building the Knowledge City when Singapore entered the era of innovation-intensive knowledge economy as early as 2008. In June 2010, the foundation of China-Singapore Guangzhou Knowledge City was laid. From a small field to a modern new city, it has developed into a new highland for knowledge creation, a free port for international talents, a source of innovation and a demonstration area for open cooperation in the Greater Bay Area in the past 12 years. As a state-level bilateral cooperation project between China and Singapore, the China-Singapore Guangzhou Knowledge City has continued to deepen the level of China-Singapore cooperation, attracting a total investment of over 17 billion yuan from more than 80 new enterprises, making it the first choice for Singaporean companies to settle in China.
Looking at the future development of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, Gu Haiwen noted that “the cooperation between Shenzhen and Singapore in smart city will help to upgrade the smart finance sector in the Greater Bay Area. Whereas the Guangzhou China-Singapore Knowledge City will build a center for intellectual property and innovative technology. In addition, China-Singapore International Joint Research Institute can provide innovative solutions and resources to competitive industries of other cities in the Greater Bay Area.”
“I hope there will be more and more cooperation and opportunities between Singapore and the Greater Bay Area in the future," Gu said. "China-Singapore International Joint Research Institute as a technology collaboration platform, leveraging technology and innovation resources of both China and Singapore, will contribute to the building of the Greater Bay Area into a hub for intelligent manufacturing, intellectual property rights, scientific and technological innovation, and international talents."
