Dragons and Phoenixes have always been lucky symbols for the Chinese since ancient China. In 1983, a tomb from the Nanyue Kingdom (from 204 to 111 BC) was discovered in Guangzhou. It was later verified as the grave of the second king of the kingdom, Zhao Mo.
A jade disc, now called Jade Openwork Disc with Dragon and Phoenix, was unearthed at Zhao's right eye. The disc is partitioned into two rings. The inner ring is a flying dragon, whose front claw holds a phoenix with its luxurious tail in cloud patterns covering the space of the outer ring.
The Nanyue Kingdom was a dependency of the Han Dynasty, which honored the right side. Therefore, the jade disc at Zhao's right eye must have represented the highest level of an artistic carving at that time. Due to its delicacy, the design has been chosen as the emblem of the Nanyue King Museum.
