#LingnanCelebrity Yuan Longping is known as the "Father of Hybrid Rice". However, Ding Ying, who was 42 years older than Yuan, began breeding hybrid rice around 1930. Ding was the first president of the South China Agricultural College (now South China Agricultural University). He was the first rice scientist in China who developed new rice varieties by crossing cultivated rice with wild rice, earning the name of the "Father of Chinese Rice Science". Academicians like Huang Yaoxiang (who developed the first semi-dwarf rice variety "Guangchangai") and Lu Yonggen (who made contributions to the research of rice genetics) are Ding's students.

说起杂交水稻，人们多会想到“中国杂交水稻之父”袁隆平。其实，1930年前后，一位比袁隆平年长42岁的岭南科学家就已开始进行杂交水稻试验。这位蜚声世界的科学家，就是华南农学院（华南农业大学前身）第一任校长丁颖。丁颖是中国首位用栽培稻与野生稻杂交、成功育成新品种的稻作学家，被业内公认为“中国稻作科学之父”。黄耀祥院士、卢永根院士、蒲蛰龙院士、赵善欢院士等都是他的弟子。
