Guangzhou Opera House plans to launch a new music season from April to October this year, highlighting eight performances incorporating Chinese traditional style and culture, a trend known as guochao. Those Chinese classical pieces will be presented by ancient Chinese instruments including Chinese chime bells, Guzheng and Guqin as well as guitar and celadon.

◆ What is Qin by Zide Guqin Studio

This is the first show of the music season, performed by Zide Guqin Studio, a Guqin club popular on both Youtube and Chinese video app Bilibili. This studio was founded in 2014, with the majority of its members born after 1980s and 1990s. It is committed to promoting Chinese traditional culture in the form of concerts, lectures, teaching and online videos.

◆ Illustration exhibition featuring cats

Chinese illustrator Su Zhilou combines popular images of cats with anecdotes of famous people and folklore from ancient Chinese dynasties to create vivid and cute images of cats in the form of both traditional Chinese realistic paintings and ink paintings. The exhibition displays two series of illustrations about ancient Chinese opera performing arts as well as recreation and entertainment.

◆ A collection of Chinese Classics by pianist Andrey Kudryyakov and violist Anna Ganina

This concert features several Chinese classics, including The Butterfly Lovers Violin Concerto, The Moon over a Fountain and The Celebration of Harvest. It will be performed by Andrey Kudryyakov, a world-famous Russian pianist, and Anna Ganina, the winner of the Russian Presidential Prize.

◆ Crossover concert Celadon Movement presented byCixiCeladon Ou Music Troupe

This performance is divided into seven chapters, integrating acoustic images, body movements as well as audiovisual elements to present the unique charm of pieces played by celadon.CixiCeladon Ou Music Troupe performed well-known pieces, including Molihua (Jasmine Flower) and Meihua Sannong (Three Variations on the Plum Blossom) on ceramic vessels and percussion instruments, accompanied by flutes, drums, bells and string instruments.

◆ Concert inspired by The Book of Songs

This concert will be performed by famous Guzheng performer Chang Jing and her band called “Xian”, featuring a new musical collection inspired by the Chinese classic The Book of Songs.

◆ A new adaptation of the Peking Opera New Dragon Inn

The new Peking Opera production New Dragon Inn, which has been adapted from a movie of the same name, retains the classic story and character relationships of the original film, while creating a new way to interpret the story with traditional opera techniques.

The film, which centers around themes of love and righteousness, also has fast-paced action sequences and martial arts stunts, which provide the right ingredients for a Peking Opera production. Peking Opera artists Shi Yihong will play the lead role in this production.

◆ An immersive concert played by chime bells

The chime bells used in this concert are reproductions of the Zenghouyi Chime Bells, which weremadein 443 B.C. and were unearthed in 1978 in the Tomb of Marquis Yi of Zeng in Hubei Province.

The Zenghouyi Chime Bells is the largest set of bronze bells excavated in the world comprising 65 bells in various sizes, with each bell producing two different tones when struck, they are hung at three levels and divided into eight groups. The bells cover roughly 5 octaves and the middle 3 octaves produce 12 semitones each. There is an inscription on each bell that records events, musical theories and the sound that the particular bell products.

◆ Rock band Hanggai's Big Band Brass concert

Founded in 2004, Hanggai, a rock band of ethnic Mongolian musicians, has played more than 500 shows in 60 countries on 6 continents, making them one of the most sought-after Chinese bands on the international music scene.

The Beijing-based band has forged their trademark style by distilling everything powerful from Mongolian folk music and fusing it with modern styles such as punk rock. The concert features the band's 2019 album Big Band Brass, which is also another of the band's bold efforts to establish a new bond between eastern and western music.

◆ A concert entitled Sketches of China by Yang Xuefei, Lu Yiwen and Sun Ying

This concert features ancient Chinese songs, folk ditties and newly composed contemporary works, and will be performed by world-renowned classic guitarist Yang Xuefei, Erhu player Lu Yiwen and Pipa player Sun Ying.
